A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, led by elder statesman Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has appointed lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi as its National Organising Secretary. The appointment was announced in a communique released on Tuesday after the faction’s general meeting at Adebanjo’s residence in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.
The communique, jointly signed by the faction’s Deputy Leader, Oladipo Olaitan, and National Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye, confirmed that Farotimi’s appointment was unanimously approved by members present at the meeting. “The general meeting considered and approved the appointment of Barrister Dele Farotimi as the National Organising Secretary of Afenifere,” the statement read.
Farotimi, a well-known advocate for good governance, human rights, and the restructuring of Nigeria, has built a reputation as a fearless voice in the country’s socio-political space. His activism, particularly in the areas of judicial reform and social justice, has earned him both admiration and criticism. Many see his appointment as a strategic move to strengthen the faction’s organisational structure and deepen its influence on national discourse.
The development follows the resolution of a legal dispute involving Farotimi and legal luminary Afe Babalola (SAN). A day before the appointment was announced, Babalola agreed to withdraw a defamation lawsuit against Farotimi over comments made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The book, which critiques systemic failings in Nigeria’s legal framework, had led to tensions between the two legal professionals. However, following appeals from Yoruba elders, Babalola opted for an out-of-court settlement, putting an end to the dispute.
Farotimi’s appointment comes at a critical time for Afenifere, as internal divisions within the group continue to shape Yoruba political dynamics. The Adebanjo-led faction has remained vocal on issues of national restructuring, constitutional amendments, and regional autonomy, often clashing with another faction led by Pa Reuben Fasoranti. The addition of Farotimi to the leadership team is expected to reinforce the faction’s commitment to these causes while positioning it as a key player in Nigeria’s broader political landscape.
As the country gears up for the 2027 general elections, Afenifere’s role in shaping the Yoruba agenda remains a subject of intense debate. Farotimi’s leadership qualities and ideological stance suggest that the group may adopt a more radical approach in advocating for regional interests. His appointment is also likely to influence Afenifere’s engagement with political actors at both state and national levels.
With his new role taking effect immediately, Farotimi is expected to work closely with other executives to mobilise support for the faction’s vision and strengthen its organisational reach. His tenure will likely be watched closely by political observers, particularly in light of the growing push for restructuring and reforms within the country.
