Novak Djokovic overcame American fourth seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 on Tuesday to book his place in the US Open semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz.
The 38-year-old Serb, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title, prevailed in a tense three-hour, 24-minute battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium, sealing victory when Fritz double-faulted on match point.
Djokovic admitted he had to ride his luck, saving crucial break points in the second set. “It was an incredibly close match. A few points decided it,” he said.
Fritz, who was seeking to become the first American man to win a major since 2003, converted just two of 13 break chances, missing opportunities in the first two sets before clawing one back in the third.
Djokovic, however, regrouped to close out the fourth set and the match.
The win sets up a blockbuster last-four clash with Alcaraz, who has been in dominant form.
