Borussia Dortmund produced a rousing display and a 3-1 win on the night, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the heavy damage inflicted in the first leg, as Barcelona advanced 5-3 on aggregate to book their first UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance since 2019.
Despite facing a mountain to climb, the Yellow Wall roared its team into action, and BVB responded with fire. Serhou Guirassy coolly converted a 10th-minute penalty with a Panenka after Pascal Gross was fouled, injecting early belief into the Signal Iduna Park faithful.
Dortmund kept pushing and added a second after the break through Guirassy again, nodding in from close range. But just five minutes later, Ramy Bensebaini inadvertently turned Fermin Lopez’s low cross into his own net, halting momentum.
Guirassy completed his hat-trick late on to cap a brilliant individual display, but time and aggregate were not on Dortmund’s side. Julian Brandt had a late effort ruled out, and the hosts ran out of steam in their hunt for a miracle.
Barcelona, despite losing their first match of 2025, held firm and now await either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.
For Dortmund, the performance offers encouragement as they shift focus back to domestic matters and a late push for Champions League qualification next season.
