Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has eased injury concerns over Alexander Isak, confirming the Swedish striker should be fit for the upcoming League Cup final against Liverpool.
Isak, 25, limped off during Newcastle’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, sparking fears over his availability. However, Howe reassured fans on Friday, stating that Isak was only suffering from fatigue and has trained normally since.
“Alex is fine. He felt a bit of tightness, so we withdrew him as a precaution. He has trained every day and he’s good,” Howe said.
When asked about his availability for Monday’s Premier League clash with West Ham and the final at Wembley on March 16, Howe remained optimistic: “Fingers crossed, yeah. If he is fit, he will play, because that is the best way to keep him in top condition.”
Newcastle will already be without Anthony Gordon, who is suspended, as well as injured defenders Lewis Hall and Sven Botman. Isak’s presence will be crucial as the Magpies chase their first major trophy since 1955.
The in-form striker has netted 22 goals in 31 appearances this season and remains under contract until 2028. However, his performances have reportedly attracted interest from top clubs, including Liverpool and Arsenal.
Newcastle currently sit sixth in the Premier League, three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. Howe, unfazed by speculation surrounding Isak’s future, emphasized: “The best thing we can do is just relax and let him play his football.”
