Edwards Leads USA Stars to All-Star Glory.
Anthony Edwards powered the USA Stars to a commanding 47-21 win over USA
Stripes in the final of the 75th NBA All-Star Game tournament at Intuit Dome on Sunday,
earning MVP honours.
Tyrese Maxey scored nine points, with Edwards and Chet Holmgren adding eight each
as the youthful Stars overwhelmed their veteran opponents.
A 12-1 opening run set the tone, and a later 15-0 surge put the game beyond reach.
“We chose to compete today and we came out on top,” said Edwards.
Donovan Mitchell scored six points for the Stripes, while LeBron James, appearing in a
record 22nd All-Star Game, added five.
The revamped four-team format, which also included a World side, was introduced to
increase intensity.
Former US President Barack Obama said fans saw real effort and noted that
international matchups always spark competition.
Earlier, Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points, including the winning three-pointer with 3.5
seconds left, as the Stripes edged the World 48-45.
“I made my first one, kept on from there and they just kept falling,” Leonard said. Victor
Wembanyama led the World with 19 points.
In another round-robin game, Edwards scored 13 as the Stars beat the World 37-35 in
overtime, later admitting, “Wemby set the tone. We had to pick it up.” The Stripes also
beat the Stars 42-40 thanks to De’Aaron Fox’s buzzer-beater, with James saying, “You
live for these moments.”
