El Kaabi Stunner Sends Morocco Off to Winning AFCON Start

Ayoub El Kaabi scored a sensational bicycle-kick goal as hosts Morocco opened the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Comoros, extending the trend of host nations winning their opening match for a fourth straight edition.

Morocco dominated early but missed a golden chance to lead when Soufiane Rahimi saw his 11th-minute penalty saved by Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor.

The Atlas Lions were also forced into an early change after captain Romain Saiss went off injured, and they went into the break frustrated after a VAR review ruled out another penalty appeal.

The breakthrough finally arrived nine minutes into the second half when Brahim Diaz fired home from close range after a precise pass from Noussair Mazraoui.

Morocco sealed the win in style in the 74th minute as substitute El Kaabi produced an acrobatic overhead kick that drew loud celebrations in Rabat.

The hosts stretched their unbeaten home run to nine matches and will face Mali next, while Comoros turn their attention to a key group clash against Zambia.
