Emery Admits Title Dream Over After Wolves Defeat.
A frustrated Unai Emery admitted Aston Villa’s Premier League title hopes are over
after a 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Friday night.
Villa were undone by Rodrigo Gomes’ late strike as Wolves secured a deserved win,
leaving Emery’s side with just three victories in their last 10 league matches and
clinging to third place.
“We are losing the opportunity to win the title in the Premier League,” Emery said.
“Two months ago, we were competing with Arsenal and Manchester City, and you
were asking me about it. Maybe we can, some supporters were dreaming it. Now we
do not have the possibility to fight for the Premier League.”
The Spaniard insisted his team is still exceeding expectations despite the slump.
“In September, I was worried, and the objective was to stay in the Premier League. In December, I was so happy to get the top-five position and achieve the Champions
League. One month ago, I was dreaming about maybe winning the Premier League.
Now we are in the average to be in the top five.”
Villa missed the chance to move clear of rivals after slipping against the league’s
bottom side.
Chelsea and Manchester United, the two teams directly below them, are next in the
Premier League, with United able to climb to third if they beat Crystal Palace on
Sunday.
