A court in Equatorial Guinea has handed senior government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga an eight-year prison sentence for embezzlement, months after he made headlines over leaked sex tapes involving the spouses of fellow officials.

Supreme Court press director Hilario Mitogo, who briefed journalists via WhatsApp, said the Bioko provincial tribunal convicted Engonga of misappropriating funds meant for official travel and channeling them into personal use.

Engonga, married and formerly head of the national financial investigation agency was prosecuted alongside five other senior officials accused of siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich Central African country.

Known popularly as “Bello,” Engonga drew international attention last November when explicit videos, some reportedly filmed in his finance ministry office, surfaced on social media during his pretrial detention for the embezzlement charges.

The scandal fueled a wave of online parodies, spawning songs, dances, and jokes about a spoof aphrodisiac dubbed “Balthazariem.”

Mitogo confirmed that the provincial court imposed both an eight-year jail term and a fine of $220,000 on Engonga.
