The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has officially suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos, along with two other medical professionals, from practicing medicine in Nigeria. This decision was announced on March 3, 2026, following the panel’s investigation, which revealed a prima facie case of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi, the son of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Nkanu tragically passed away on January 7, 2026, in the hospital amid allegations of significant lapses in his care. Reports indicate that these lapses included an overdose of the sedative propofol, inadequate monitoring of the child’s vital signs, and a failure to provide essential oxygen support during a critical period of treatment. The panel’s findings have barred the implicated doctors from practicing pending a comprehensive tribunal hearing.

This incident has raised serious concerns about patient safety and the standards of care in Nigerian healthcare facilities, particularly in pediatric cases. The suspension has garnered widespread attention, not only because of the high-profile nature of the family involved but also because of its broader implications for medical ethics and accountability in the country.
