Fabio Cannavaro, a World Cup-winning captain and Ballon d’Or recipient, has been named the head coach of Uzbekistan as the country gears up for its inaugural World Cup appearance in 2026.
At 52, the Italian replaces Timur Kapadze, who successfully led Uzbekistan to qualification after taking over from Srecko Katanec during the campaign. Kapadze oversaw an impressive run, with only one loss in 15 matches, amassing 21 points from 10 games in the third round—performance that would have likely ensured qualification even before the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams.
Cannavaro’s appointment signifies a new era for the team. His extensive experience, strong leadership, and tactical acumen are expected to enhance Uzbekistan’s dynamic and skillful playing style.
Previously the manager of Dinamo Zagreb, Cannavaro departed the Croatian side in April 2025 after 14 matches. He brings a rich background of international experience and a winning mindset to his new role.
Joining him on the coaching staff will be Eugenio Albarella as assistant coach, Francesco Troise as fitness coach, and Antonio Chimenti as goalkeeping coach, all working together as Uzbekistan prepares for its momentous debut on football’s grandest stage.
