Bruno Fernandes scored twice to hand Manchester United a 2–1 win over West Ham in their Premier League Summer Series opener at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The United captain punished two costly mistakes from West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, first converting a fifth-minute penalty after the Frenchman fouled Ayden Heaven, then lifting in a second after a poor clearance led to a neat assist from Kobbie Mainoo.

Jarrod Bowen pulled one back for West Ham in the 63rd minute and forced a late save from Altay Bayindir, but United held firm to give new boss Ruben Amorim a positive start to pre-season.

“It’s good to win, even in a friendly,” Fernandes said post-match. “We want to prepare in the best way.”
