Fernandinho has officially retired from professional football at the age of 40, bringing an end to a trophy-laden career spanning two decades.

The former Manchester City and Brazil midfielder confirmed his decision after a farewell charity match at Arena da Baixada, returning to the stadium where his journey began with Athletico Paranaense.

Fernandinho rose to prominence at Shakhtar Donetsk, winning six league titles and the 2009 UEFA Cup before earning a move to Manchester City.

He became a central figure in City’s modern era, collecting five Premier League titles and six EFL Cups across 264 league appearances.

He also featured in 10 World Cup matches for Brazil and lifted the 2019 Copa America.

Speaking after his farewell match, Fernandinho said he felt “tired after 30 minutes” and admitted he no longer had the motivation to continue, adding that it was now time to enjoy life with his family.
