The Federal Government has approved the appointment of Professor Lucian Chukwu as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Admiralty University, Ibuzor, Delta State, for a single tenure of five years, effective February 28, 2025. The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Education in an official statement, reaffirming the government’s commitment to merit-based appointments in the nation’s higher education sector.

Professor Chukwu, before his new role, served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services) at the University of Lagos. His appointment follows a rigorous selection process conducted by the Governing Council of Admiralty University on February 26 and 27, 2025. According to the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, Chukwu emerged as the top candidate, scoring 83.41% of the total votes among the five candidates interviewed for the position.

The selection process was not without controversy. Reports had previously surfaced, suggesting that the exercise was marred by internal disputes and concerns among stakeholders over possible attempts to sideline merit in favor of other considerations. However, the ministry emphasized that the decision was based strictly on performance, aligning with the Federal Government’s commitment to upholding meritocracy in academic leadership appointments.

Confirming the appointment, Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, expressed confidence in Professor Chukwu’s ability to steer the university toward greater academic excellence and institutional development. “In line with the principle of merit being upheld by the Federal Government, the Honourable Minister of Education has approved the appointment of Professor Lucian O. Chukwu as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Admiralty University, Ibuzor,” the ministry’s statement read. “The Honourable Minister wishes the new Vice-Chancellor a successful tenure in office.”

Professor Chukwu brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various academic and administrative capacities at the University of Lagos. His leadership is expected to drive Admiralty University toward its vision of becoming a center of excellence in higher education, research, and innovation.

With this appointment, attention now shifts to how Professor Chukwu will navigate the challenges ahead, particularly in addressing concerns raised during the selection process and ensuring the university continues on a trajectory of growth and academic distinction. As he assumes office, the academic community and stakeholders will be keenly watching his administration’s approach to governance, faculty development, and student engagement in the years to come.
