The Federal Government has officially launched the Governing Council and Principal Officers for the Federal University of Environment and Technology, located in Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State.

During the inauguration ceremony held on Monday in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa urged the council members to demonstrate visionary leadership and engage with dedication, transparency, and integrity, in accordance with the university’s founding Act.

He emphasized the unique contributions each member can make to the university’s development, highlighting its potential to emerge as a leading institution in environmental and technological research and innovation. Dr. Alausa praised the peaceful and picturesque surroundings of Koroma/Saakpenwa, describing it as an ideal location for academic advancement and pioneering research. He also noted that the university’s state-of-the-art facilities would position it as a center for innovation both nationally and internationally.

He extended his congratulations to the newly appointed officers, encouraging them to work collaboratively to fulfill the university’s mission, enhance research capabilities, and play a significant role in national progress. Dr. Tunji Alausa pointed out that the establishment of this institution goes beyond merely increasing the number of higher education institutions; it is a strategic response to the pressing environmental issues facing both Nigeria and the global community.

He stated, “This university is intended to be a center of excellence in fields such as environmental sciences, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable technological research. It is expected to produce locally relevant, research-based solutions that address both local challenges and global objectives.

“To the newly appointed Governing Council, I extend my congratulations. Your selection reflects your abilities and represents a call to serve with dedication. The responsibilities you are about to undertake require more than ceremonial duties; they demand visionary leadership, strategic oversight, accountability, and steadfast integrity.”

The university’s leadership includes Prof. Don Mon Baridam as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, with Prof. Chinedu Mmom serving as the Vice-Chancellor.

In an interview with a correspondent from The Beacon Nigeria newspaper following his inauguration, newly appointed governing council member Mr. Amid Adekunle emphasized that his appointment is a call to serve the nation rather than personal interests. He stated, “My desire to serve the country, a commitment I expressed in 2007, has now become a reality.” Mr. Adekunle acknowledged the significant responsibility ahead, saying, “This is an onerous task that must be faced squarely.” He expressed optimism that his over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, particularly in the Niger Delta, will be instrumental in fulfilling his duties. He also extended his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his nomination and to Honorable Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa for his support.
