The Federal Government is set to roll out solar power systems across military formations nationwide, replacing diesel generators under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI).
The plan emerged after a high-level meeting on Thursday between the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, at Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
Aliyu explained that the NPSSI, approved by the Federal Government with an initial N100bn funding, targets public institutions such as schools, hospitals, government offices, and other key facilities. The initiative is designed to reduce energy costs, enhance reliability, and promote Nigeria’s shift to clean energy.
“The NPSSI is a collaborative programme led by the REA alongside the Budget Office of the Federation, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria, and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated,” Aliyu said. “Several military formations have already shown interest, and a unified approach will ensure maximum impact. Participation will require a Memorandum of Understanding with military leadership, based on a pay-for-service model to guarantee sustainability.”
Similar agreements have already been signed with the Police Trust Fund, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigerian Correctional Service.
General Musa welcomed the project, describing it as “timely and much-needed.” He announced plans to set up a military team to work with the REA in mapping out priority locations and crafting an implementation strategy.
The discussions also explored involving the Nigerian Army’s Engineers and Logistics Unit to assist with the installation and maintenance of the systems. A joint REA–Military Solar Committee will be established to finalise deployment plans.
The move highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to renewable energy adoption and the REA’s mission to extend clean power to critical infrastructure across the country.
