The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the jailbreak at the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State which happened early Monday. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo depicted the incident as unfortunate and affirmed that all escaped inmates would be recaptured using biometric technology and other security measures.
Twelve prisoners escaped after tampering with padlocks in one section of the facility. The minister, in response, directed the acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi to visit the center, evaluate the situation and conduct a full audit to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape. Security agencies swiftly mobilized.. leading to the recapture of five of the fleeing inmates.
NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar confirmed that security operatives had been deployed to restore order and track down the remaining escapees. He further announced a nationwide security audit of correctional facilities to prevent future incidents.
Kogi’s Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo demonstrated concerns over the recurring jail breaks in the state—referencing four similar incidents in the last decade. He stressed the need for a thorough investigation into potential security lapses. Authorities have encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities as efforts continue to re-arrest the remaining escapees.
