The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that the Federal Government generated approximately N2.4 billion from marriage contracts through its marriage registry in 2024.

He also stated that the government plans to enhance security along the nation’s borders to reduce the influx of irregular migrants.

The minister made these remarks during a media briefing with heads of agencies under the ministry in Abuja on Tuesday.

Additionally, he revealed that over N3.2 billion was collected from expatriate quota applications, representing a 150% increase in overall revenue.

He added that the marriage registry has become a substantial source of income as the ministry in 2023 surpassed its projected revenue from marriage contracts, collecting over N892m as of October 31, 2023.

Tunji-Ojo also disclosed that the issuance of expatriate quotas contributed significantly to the Ministry’s revenue. He said in 2023, the Ministry generated over one point N1bn from expatriate quota permits, surpassing the N600m target by over N600m.
