The federal government has restated its ambition of achieving 10 billion standard cubic feet (SCF) of daily gas production by 2030, reaffirming that ongoing reforms are geared towards positioning Nigeria as a leading global energy hub.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, gave the assurance in Abuja during a strategic meeting with the management of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG).

According to spokesperson of the ministry, Mohammad Manga, the session centred on scaling up gas production, improving the investment climate, and tackling infrastructure challenges in the sector.

Edun said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had introduced key reforms to stabilise the economy and encourage private sector participation in both manufacturing and energy. He cited recent agreements, including the landmark Deepwater deal with TotalEnergies, as evidence of renewed investor confidence.

“The President has stabilised the economy and created new opportunities for both manufacturing and energy. As we implement comprehensive tax reforms, your input will be vital in shaping a more attractive business landscape,” Edun told the NLNG delegation.

He further explained that the rollout of digital trade systems would help eliminate inefficiencies while deepening transparency. “We want a transparent, technology-driven environment where investors can confidently operate,” the minister said.

In his remarks, NLNG Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, highlighted the company’s recent achievements, noting improved gas supply and enhanced security on the Trans-Niger pipeline. He added that capacity utilisation had risen above 70 per cent.

On infrastructure, Mshelbila reported progress on the Bodo-Bonny Road project and appealed to the government to extend similar backing to the East-West highway through the tax credit scheme.

The meeting is regarded as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive to harness its abundant gas resources, with both government and private stakeholders aligning efforts to meet the ambitious 2030 target.

Officials believe that with stronger reforms, improved infrastructure, and deeper collaboration between the public and private sectors, Nigeria can consolidate its role in the global energy market while advancing economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration.
