The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has affirmed that the Federal Government is yet to begin direct allocation of funds to Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country —attributing the delay to ongoing procedural and legal requirements. Hon. Odunayo Alegbere, Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees cited that while local governments have remained pivotal in ensuring national stability, the implementation of direct funding must follow due administrative processes to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
Alegbere also lauded President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State —describing it as a timely intervention that prevented a looming civil crisis. He cited that the President’s decisive action played a vital role in de-escalating tensions and restoring calm in the state. According to him, “The emergency rule in Rivers State was necessary to prevent further chaos and ensure peace.”
ALGON reaffirmed its support for the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and encouraged citizens to remain patient as the direct allocation framework is finalized. The association expressed confidence that the initiative will ultimately improve transparency and efficiency in local government administration nationwide.
