FIFA has introduced new rules requiring every team in women’s tournaments to
include at least one female head coach or assistant.
The regulation, which takes effect this year, also mandates that at least two female
staff members must be on the bench during matches across all competitions.
FIFA’s chief football officer, Jill Ellis, said there are not enough women in coaching
and stressed that the new policy is aimed at accelerating change and increasing
visibility.
Sarina Wiegman has previously echoed similar concerns, noting the need for better
balance to inspire more women to enter coaching.
The move is part of FIFA’s long-term strategy to boost female representation ahead
of future tournaments, including the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
