FIFA Suspends Congo Republic and Pakistan from International Football

FIFA has imposed suspensions on the Congo Republic’s football association (FECOFOOT) and the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), barring both nations from international competitions.

FECOFOOT’s suspension stems from third-party interference, violating FIFA’s statutes. The decision followed joint FIFA and CAF (Confederation of African Football) investigations in Brazzaville. To lift the ban, FIFA has demanded the full restoration of FECOFOOT’s control over its headquarters and facilities.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s suspension was triggered by its failure to implement constitutional reforms ensuring fair and democratic elections. This marks the third time FIFA has suspended the PFF, following similar bans in 2017 and 2021. The suspension will only be lifted if the PFF Congress approves FIFA and AFC’s (Asian Football Confederation) proposed amendments.

PFF Normalisation Committee chairman Haroon Malik stated that many elected members oppose FIFA’s proposed changes, adding that the next phase of reforms will be overseen by the newly elected Congress members.
