The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported significant property damage amounting to millions of naira due to a fire incident in Idumota, Lagos. According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s permanent secretary, the fire broke out on Friday night.
Initial investigations indicated that several buildings serving as retail spaces for car spare parts were engulfed in flames. In response to distress calls received on the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines at approximately 10:20 PM, LASEMA mobilized its Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
Upon their arrival at the scene by 10:55 PM, the teams found multiple shops consumed by the fire. The exact cause of the blaze had not been determined at the time of the report. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or casualties linked to the incident.
Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized that properties and goods worth hundreds of millions of naira were lost to the fire. The LASEMA Shark Response Team, Fire Unit, and Tiger Response Team collaborated with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service to manage the situation and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
Law enforcement agencies on-site implemented crowd control measures to maintain safety around the area. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that “frantic efforts” were underway to fully extinguish the flames, with “dampening down” already in progress to eliminate any remaining hotspots. Additionally, salvage operations for valuable items from the affected shops were actively taking place. The recovery efforts are still in progress.
