Fire Service Urges Caution During Easter Festivities

April 20, 2025

As Christians around the world celebrate Easter, the Federal Fire Service has issued a strong safety advisory to Nigerians, cautioning against unsupervised swimming and unsafe barbecue practices. Controller General Abdulganiyu Jaji, in a statement, congratulated Christians and encouraged citizens to prioritize safety during the holiday season. He warned families, especially youths against lighting barbecues near dry vegetation or in windy areas—stating that such actions could easily spark devastating fires. Jaji also raised concerns over kitchen safety—advising celebrants never to leave cooking unattended and to keep flammable items away from open flames. Underscoring the dangers of open-water swimming, he cautioned that even experienced swimmers could fall victim to strong currents and cold-water shock. He urged the public to avoid rivers, lakes and beaches, and further advised anyone who falls into water to float on their back. Jaji, beyond safety, called for national unity and reaffirmed the Service’s determination to improving emergency responses, especially in the face of tanker fire incidents.
