Nigeria delivered a ruthless performance to dismantle Zambia 5-0 and storm into the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Friday in Casablanca.
It was a no-contest from the opening whistle. Osinachi Ohale’s header after just 90 seconds set the tone, and goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Oluwatosin Demehin and Folashade Ijamilusi sealed a comprehensive win for the record champions.
Okoronkwo, handed her first start of the tournament, starred in a dominant first-half display as Nigeria raced into a 3-0 lead by the break. Ihezuo punished hesitant defending before Demehin and Ijamilusi added further gloss to the scoreline in the second period.
Zambia, seen as one of the pre-tournament contenders, were completely overrun. Their much-hyped attacking pair of Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji failed to muster a single shot on target as Nigeria’s defence held firm once again.
Coach Justine Madugu’s side, who had looked sluggish in the group stage, finally found their rhythm and ruthlessness just when it mattered.
The Super Falcons are yet to concede a goal in Morocco and now appear well positioned in their bid for a 10th WAFCON title.
They await either South Africa or Senegal in the semi-finals on Tuesday, still unbeaten and now brimming with belief.
