Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana and Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri revealed
they were racially abused on social media following their sides’ 1-1 Premier League
draw at Stamford Bridge.
Fofana, sent off in the 72nd minute after a second yellow card for a challenge on
James Ward-Prowse, shared screenshots of the messages he received on
Instagram.
“2026, it’s still the same thing, nothing changes,” he wrote.
“You create big campaigns against racism, but nobody actually does anything.”
Chelsea swiftly condemned the abuse, calling it “completely unacceptable” and
pledging full support for the French defender while working with authorities to identify
those responsible.
Mejbri, who was fouled in the incident that led to Fofana’s dismissal, also posted
abusive messages sent to him, urging offenders to “educate yourself and your kids.”
Burnley backed the Tunisian, reiterating their zero-tolerance stance and confirming
the matter had been reported to Meta, the Premier League and the police.
The draw lifted Chelsea into fourth place on goal difference, though Manchester
United could reclaim the spot with victory over Everton on Monday.
