Forest Advance Despite Home Defeat to Fenerbahce.
Nottingham Forest reached the UEFA Europa League last 16 with a 4-2 aggregate
win over Fenerbahce, despite losing 2-1 on the night at the City Ground.
Holding a three-goal advantage from the first leg, Forest started brightly but were
pegged back when Kerem Akturkoglu finished off a swift counter-attack in the first
half.
The Turkish side increased the pressure after the break, and Akturkoglu struck again
from the penalty spot to give the visitors hope.
With momentum swinging, Forest needed inspiration and found it through Callum
Hudson-Odoi, who calmly finished from Ola Aina’s cross to restore breathing space
in the tie.
The Premier League side saw out the contest from there to secure progression.
Fenerbahce extended their unbeaten away run to 15 matches in all competitions and
claimed just their second European away win against an English club, but a heavy
first-leg defeat proved costly.
Forest now awaits either Real Betis Balompié or FC Midtjylland in the next round as
they chase a first European trophy since 1979/80.
