Lyle Foster struck a stunning late winner as South Africa edged Angola 2-1 in their opening Group B match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Marrakech, sealing their first opening-game victory at the finals in 21 years.
Bafana Bafana took the lead midway through the first half when Oswin Appollis danced past two defenders and side-footed calmly into the bottom corner.
Angola responded before the break, as Show glanced Fredy’s low free-kick into the net to level matters.
Both sides had chances after the restart, with South Africa hitting the crossbar and Angola testing Ronwen Williams, but the decisive moment arrived in the 79th minute.
Foster was given space 25 yards from goal and curled a brilliant strike into the top corner to secure all three points.
The result gives South Africa a positive start to their AFCON campaign, while Angola were left frustrated after a lively display that ultimately went unrewarded.
