Taylor Fritz powered into the Toronto Masters semi-finals with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Andrey Rublev despite a late wobble while serving for the match.
The 26-year-old American, seeded second, was broken at 5-4 in the second set but recovered to seal victory in the tiebreak after 83 minutes, firing 20 aces and 29 winners.
It marks his first semi-final at this tournament and his fifth of the season, continuing a strong run that has seen him win 19 of his last 22 matches.
Fritz will face fellow American Ben Shelton, the fourth seed, for a place in Thursday’s final. Shelton booked his first Masters semi-final with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alex de Minaur, striking 11 aces and ending the Australian’s seven-match winning streak.
