The community of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is filled with pride as it honors one of its most distinguished alumni, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), who has recently been awarded the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH), Kenya’s highest national honor. This esteemed accolade was presented to him by His Excellency, President William Ruto of Kenya, during a State House ceremony in Nairobi, highlighting Dr. Adesina’s significant contributions to development across the continent and his unwavering commitment to Africa’s advancement.

On behalf of the University management and the entire OAU community, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire extended warm congratulations to Dr. Adesina for this well-earned recognition. He remarked, “This honor is a reflection of his outstanding leadership at the African Development Bank, based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where he has been a guiding force for transformative change, promoting sustainable development throughout Africa. His remarkable initiatives, recognized by President Ruto, include his impactful work with the Rockefeller Foundation, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), and the AfDB itself, all of which have significantly enhanced Africa’s agricultural and economic landscapes.”

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, an alumnus of Agricultural Economics from OAU, exemplifies the excellence associated with Great Ife. His academic journey at the university laid the groundwork for a career that has reached impressive global heights. From his role as Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Agriculture, where he transformed the sector with innovative policies, to his current position as AfDB President, Dr. Adesina has consistently showcased the intellectual prowess, visionary leadership, and ethical foundation that characterize an OAU education. His contributions have not only earned him this prestigious Kenyan honor but also various Nigerian national awards, including the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), underscoring his lasting impact on both national and continental levels.

As an honorary degree recipient of this University and a committed supporter of its development, he has become a remarkable ambassador for the Great Ife brand. His achievements resonate profoundly with our core values of excellence, integrity, and service to humanity, inspiring generations of students and alumni to aspire high and effect change. Dr. Adesina’s journey from the esteemed halls of OAU to the forefront of global leadership serves as a compelling reminder of the transformative power of education and the limitless opportunities for those who lead with purpose.”

The conferment of the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart on Dr. Adesina marks him as only the 20th individual to receive this honor since Kenya’s independence in 1963, placing him alongside global icons like Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II, and Kofi Annan. This recognition not only enhances Dr. Adesina’s legacy but also elevates the global stature of Obafemi Awolowo University as a beacon of excellence, nurturing leaders who shape the world.
