Multi-award-winning actress and producer Funke Akindele has once again etched her name into Nollywood history as her latest film, Behind The Scenes, emerged as the highest-grossing Nigerian movie of 2025.
In just one month, the FilmOne Entertainment–distributed blockbuster has raked in an impressive ₦2.103 billion, making it the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦2 billion mark. The movie also shattered five opening-weekend records, including the highest single-day gross on Boxing Day with ₦129.5 million.
Reacting to the milestone, FilmOne Entertainment hailed the achievement in a statement, describing Behind The Scenes as “the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time in Africa, the UK, and Ireland.” The distributor also revealed that the feat makes Akindele the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years.
With this success, Akindele now has three films that have grossed over ₦1 billion, further cementing her status as West Africa’s highest-grossing filmmaker, writer, director, and producer of all time.
Industry watchers have attributed the film’s remarkable performance to its strategic advanced screenings, an all-star cast, and a compelling, relatable storyline that explores themes of family, loyalty, and social pressure. Performances by Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, and Uche Montana were widely praised for resonating strongly with audiences.
