Atalanta missed a golden chance to claim all three points against Torino on Saturday, but manager Gian Piero Gasperini was more frustrated with the officiating than the result.
The match ended 1-1 after Mateo Retegui failed to convert a second-half penalty, while Torino offered little attacking threat.
“It’s hard to find a team that did so little offensively,” Gasperini said. “We made one mistake on their goal, but breaking down their defense wasn’t easy.”
The Atalanta boss was particularly aggrieved by a disallowed Raoul Bellanova goal and a penalty that wasn’t awarded.
“These VAR decisions cost us,” he said. “We need to ask who is really refereeing—those on the pitch or those in the VAR room?”
Meanwhile, Gianluca Scamacca made his season debut but picked up quadriceps issue just minutes after coming on.
