Gnabry Shines but Bayern Held by Resilient Dortmund in Bundesliga Thriller

Bayern Munich missed a golden opportunity to tighten their grip on the Bundesliga title race after being held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Dortmund in a gripping encounter at the Allianz Arena.

Despite dominating much of the first half, Bayern failed to convert their superiority into goals and were punished when Maximilian Beier nodded home Dortmund’s first effort on target, slipping his header through the legs of Jonas Urbig.

Bayern responded with intensity, and Waldemar Anton nearly gifted them an equaliser when he deflected a cross onto his own bar. But it was the introduction of Serge Gnabry that turned the tide for the hosts.

Gnabry’s dazzling run helped set up Raphael Guerreiro to level against his former club, before the winger added a stunning second just four minutes later, curling past Gregor Kobel after dancing past two defenders.

However, Dortmund weren’t finished. After Urbig saved Serhou Guirassy’s audacious overhead kick, Anton was in the right place to slot in the rebound and snatch a point for the visitors.

The result leaves Bayern six points clear at the top of the table with five games remaining, after second-placed Bayer Leverkusen were also held earlier in the day by Union Berlin.

Both clubs will now turn their attention back to the Champions League, where Bayern face Inter Milan with a 2-1 deficit, while Dortmund must attempt the near-impossible against Barcelona following a heavy 4-0 first-leg defeat.

Though they dropped points, Vincent Kompany’s side remain in pole position for the title, while Niko Kovac’s Dortmund still cling to fading hopes of Champions League qualification.
