In a move aimed at alleviating the impact of rising living costs, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved an upward review of salaries for customary court judges across the state. The decision affects 459 judges serving in 153 customary courts and aligns with the state’s newly implemented minimum wage of ₦80,000.

Dr. Reuben Onyishi, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Monday. Onyishi explained that the salary adjustment will take effect from January 2025 and reflects the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of judicial officers.

“This review was necessitated by the increasing cost of living, which led to the adjustment of the national minimum wage to ₦70,000. In response, Governor Mbah magnanimously increased the minimum wage in Enugu State to ₦80,000,” Onyishi said.

The upward salary review was initiated following a memo dated November 25, 2024, submitted to the governor by the Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Mr. Osinachi Nnajieze. Governor Mbah promptly approved the proposal, signaling his administration’s dedication to enhancing the living standards of public servants in the state.

The salary adjustment applies to the chairpersons and members of the 153 customary courts. Under the new structure, the monthly salary of court chairpersons has been increased from ₦42,989.76 to ₦92,989.76. Similarly, the salaries of the two members who serve on each court have been raised from ₦39,736.18 to ₦89,736.18.

This landmark decision underscores Governor Mbah’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary by addressing the welfare of its officials. The move is expected to enhance the efficiency and morale of the judges, thereby improving the administration of justice at the grassroots level.

The governor’s approval comes at a time when many states are grappling with economic challenges. Analysts have praised the salary review as a progressive step that reflects the governor’s understanding of the pivotal role the judiciary plays in ensuring law and order.

The Enugu State government has emphasized its dedication to addressing the welfare of all categories of workers as part of its broader strategy for socio-economic development. By prioritizing the well-being of judicial officers, the administration aims to foster a more robust and equitable legal system for the people of Enugu State.

Governor Mbah’s leadership continues to draw commendation for its proactive and people-centered policies, setting a benchmark for other states in Nigeria.
