Manchester United crashed to one of their darkest nights as fourth-tier Grimsby Town eliminated them from the League Cup, winning 12-11 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Blundell Park.

First-half goals from Charles Vernam and former United youth player Tyrell Warren left the six-time winners stunned at the break.

Bryan Mbeumo’s first goal for the club gave United hope before Harry Maguire’s 89th-minute header forced penalties.

The shootout stretched to 18 nerve-wracking minutes. Andre Onana denied Clarke Oduor and United had chances to seal it, but Matheus Cunha’s tame effort was saved before Mbeumo struck the crossbar, sparking wild celebrations for the home fans.

For United manager Ruben Amorim, who was heavily backed in the transfer market after last season’s disastrous campaign, the defeat will trigger fresh scrutiny.

What was meant to be a reset has instead produced humiliation, leaving the Portuguese coach under mounting pressure.

Elsewhere in the competition, Brighton hammered Oxford United 6-0, Everton beat Mansfield Town 2-0, and Fulham eased past Bristol City by the same scoreline.
