Pep Guardiola expressed his astonishment upon hearing Liverpool supporters humorously calling for his dismissal following Manchester City’s 2-0 loss at Anfield. In response, Guardiola raised six fingers, a gesture likely referencing his total of six Premier League titles. After the match, he acknowledged that he was taken aback by the chants at Anfield.
“All the stadiums want to sack me; it started at Brighton,” he told Sky Sports. “Perhaps they have a point given our recent results. I was surprised to hear it at Anfield. They didn’t chant it at 1-0, but they did at 2-0. Maybe they should have sung it earlier.”
Cody Gakpo opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 12th minute, and Mohamed Salah secured the victory with a penalty after the break. Salah’s goal led to chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from certain sections of the crowd.
Guardiola continued, “I didn’t expect that reaction from the Liverpool fans, but I understand it’s part of the game. We’ve had many fierce contests, and I have great respect for them. I am here as a manager, advocating for what we’ve achieved in the past, thanks to our players, and now more than ever, I want to support and embrace them.”
Despite the challenging results, Guardiola remains optimistic about his team’s potential this season. “Bernardo and Rico [Lewis] have accumulated significant playing time. Nathan [Ake] performed exceptionally well against one of the top wingers. I congratulate Liverpool; they earned their victory, and we accept our current situation and will work to improve.”
This defeat leaves City in fifth place in the Premier League, without a win in their last seven matches across all competitions, and trailing league leaders Liverpool by 11 points.
