HAKIMI

Achraf Hakimi has been named the 2025 African Footballer of the Year, capping a triumphant evening for Morocco at the CAF Awards in Rabat.

The PSG full-back beat Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen to the prize after a standout season that included the French title and a first Champions League triumph.

He becomes the first Moroccan to win the award since Mustapha Hadji in 1998.

Hakimi’s performances for club and country, including scoring in PSG’s 5-0 Champions League final win over Inter Milan, made him a clear favourite.

His side also lifted the UEFA Super Cup, Coupe de France and French Super Cup, though they fell short in the Club World Cup final.

The right-back, currently recovering from ankle ligament damage, accepted his award carefully, avoiding weight on his injured foot.

With Afcon 2025 on home soil approaching, he faces a tight race to regain full fitness.

Morocco also celebrated Ghizlane Chebbak’s victory in the women’s category, making her the first Moroccan to win the award since its creation in 2001.

She finished as top scorer at the delayed 2024 Women’s Afcon, though Nigeria beat Morocco in the final.

Nigeria did claim a major honour through Chiamaka Nnadozie, who won Best Goalkeeper for the third straight year.

Elsewhere, Cape Verde coach Bubista was named Men’s Coach of the Year, while Morocco’s Othmane Maamma took the Young Player of the Year award after starring in their U-20 World Cup-winning campaign.
