Lagos State Deputy Governor – Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has raised concern over a sharp and unexplained hike in his official residence’s electricity bill from N2.7 million in March to a staggering N29 million in April. Hamzat, who spoke at a roundtable hosted by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Lagos State Government in Victoria Island criticized what he characterized as “crazy bills” issued by electricity distribution companies. Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, Hamzat expressed his frustration with Eko DisCo, which allegedly ignored a prepaid meter he personally procured to avoid estimated billing. He also quoted a case in Coker Aguda, Surulere, where a resident received a N2.8 million electricity bill despite paying just N2 million in annual rent. “Our people are suffering,” Hamzat said. He lauded Lagos Energy Commissioner, Biodun Ogunleye for facilitating a solar power partnership with REA. Ogunleye assured that the deal will provide stable electricity to underserved communities—characterizing it as a transformative milestone for Lagos.
