The North-West chapter of the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard has raised alarm over what it called a plot to use former President Goodluck Jonathan as a “spoiler” in the build-up to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary for the 2027 elections.
The warning followed reports credited to Senator Abba Moro, suggesting that the PDP had allegedly shortlisted three southern aspirants, including Jonathan, as potential flag-bearers.
Speaking in Kano, the group’s North-West Coordinator, Aminu Bala Wudilawa, condemned the move, describing it as “provincial” and a threat to the unity of the party.
He stressed that only delegates duly elected under the provisions of the amended Electoral Act had the constitutional authority to choose the party’s presidential candidate.
“The PDP must not repeat the mistake of 2015, when Jonathan was pushed into a narrow, sectional approach that weakened the party and cost us the presidency.
“The PDP belongs to all Nigerians — North and South and any attempt to turn it into an ethnic project will be strongly resisted,” Wudilawa said.
While acknowledging Jonathan’s right to contest, Wudilawa said limiting the ticket to the South was a deliberate attempt to shut out qualified northern aspirants, particularly Dr. Gbenga Hashim, a PDP founding member and its first deputy national publicity secretary.
He praised Hashim as “a democrat, a successful entrepreneur, and one of the cleanest hands in Nigerian politics,” adding that Nigerians were seeking a leader with competence in economic management and national security.
“Insha Allah, that leader is Dr. Gbenga Hashim,” he declared. “No spoiler strategy will succeed in stopping his aspiration.”
