Havertz's 23rd minute strike

Kai Havertz’s first-half strike proved decisive as Arsenal edged Ipswich 1-0 at the Emirates, moving the Gunners into second place in the Premier League, six points adrift of Liverpool.

Havertz netted his seventh league goal of the season in the 23rd minute, expertly converting Leandro Trossard’s precise cross.

The home side dominated proceedings but missed opportunities to extend their lead, keeping Ipswich alive until the final whistle.

Gabriel Magalhaes squandered a golden chance, heading wide from a Declan Rice corner, while Martin Odegaard and substitute Mikel Merino were denied by Ipswich shot-stopper Arijanet Muric.

Despite their profligacy, Arsenal’s defense kept Ipswich at bay, limiting the visitors to three tame attempts on goal.

Mikel Arteta, missing the injured Bukayo Saka for at least two months, will hope his side sharpens their attacking edge as they prepare for tricky away fixtures at Brentford and Brighton.

The victory sees Arsenal climb above Chelsea, who fell to Fulham on Boxing Day, while Ipswich remain in 19th but earned admiration from their traveling supporters for their spirited display.
