Nigeria took an early lead with Frank Onyeka scoring in the third minute, but DR Congo responded with a goal from M. Elia in the 32nd minute, leveling the score at 1-1. Despite both teams battling fiercely through regulation and an additional 30 minutes of extra time, neither could find the back of the net again, pushing the match to penalties.
In extra time, Nigeria had its chances, including a missed header by Tolu Arokodare and a critical save by goalkeeper Nwabali from a free kick. Ultimately, the penalty shootout ended 4-3 in favor of DR Congo, who displayed a strong performance throughout the match, especially after equalizing.
