George Foreman, the iconic two-time world heavyweight boxing champion and thriving entrepreneur, has passed away at the age of 76. His family shared the news of his peaceful death on March 21, 2025, surrounded by those he loved.

In a heartfelt statement released on the boxer’s official Instagram account, his family expressed their sorrow: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. He left us peacefully on March 21, 2025, surrounded by family. We appreciate the overwhelming love and prayers and ask for privacy as we celebrate the remarkable life of a man we cherished.”

Born in 1949 in Houston, Texas, Foreman faced a tough childhood but found his path through the Job Corps program, where he discovered his passion for boxing. His younger brother, Roy, recalled, “At just 13, George was around 6-foot-2 and weighed 200 pounds, known as the tough guy in the neighborhood. When you’re bigger and stronger, you tend to think you’re better than everyone else.”

Foreman showcased his athletic talent by winning a gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, achieving super-heavyweight glory at the age of 19. He celebrated his victory by waving an American flag shortly after the historic Black Power salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos.

Standing tall at 6-foot-4 and nicknamed ‘Big George,’ he was a formidable presence in the heavyweight boxing scene. With his remarkable power and speed, he swiftly climbed the professional ladder, claiming the heavyweight title in 1973 by defeating Joe Frazier in just two rounds. By the time he faced Muhammad Ali in October 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire, he boasted an undefeated record of 40-0.

However, Ali’s famous ‘rope-a-dope’ tactic proved effective, tiring Foreman out, leading to his defeat in the eighth round. Reflecting on that moment, Foreman later described it as “the most embarrassing moment of my life, transitioning from pride to pity. It was devastating.”

According to family sources, Foreman peacefully passed away at a Houston hospital, though the cause of death has not been revealed. They acknowledged his legacy and requested privacy during this difficult time as they grieve the former Olympic champion, who went on to become an ordained preacher and founded the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Texas.

“Our hearts are shattered. With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who departed peacefully on March 21, 2025, surrounded by family,” the statement conveyed. “He was a devoted preacher, a loving husband, a caring father, and a proud grandfather. His life was characterized by steadfast faith, humility, and purpose. A humanitarian, an Olympian, and a two-time heavyweight champion, he was deeply respected—a force for good, a man of discipline and conviction, dedicated to protecting his legacy and family.”
