Nigeria may face widespread blackouts if thermal power plants are forced offline due to supply disruptions triggered by PENGASSAN’s planned nationwide strike.
Executive Secretary of the Association of Power Generating Companies (GenCos), Joy Ogaji, sounded the alarm in a WhatsApp alert, stating that gas suppliers have instructed thermal plants to suspend operations in line with PENGASSAN’s strike directive.
She noted that the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company has specifically asked generation companies to comply.
Ogaji warned that the country cannot rely on hydropower alone to sustain the national grid, raising fears of an imminent blackout.
The warnings come amid PENGASSAN’s earlier announcement of a nationwide work stoppage in protest against the dismissal of over 800 workers from the Dangote Refinery.
The union’s action is expected to disrupt not only the oil and gas sector but also the flow of gas, crude, and electricity across the country.
Since thermal plants generate more than 70% of Nigeria’s electricity, experts warn that their forced shutdown could trigger rapid strain on hydroelectric systems and even lead to grid collapse.
