The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has strongly cautioned political parties and politicians against early public campaigning ahead of the 2027 general elections, labelling such actions as both inappropriate and a violation of the Electoral Act.
This warning follows rising concerns over premature canvassing and public endorsements by some politicians, even though no official timetable has been released.
Responding to media inquiries, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified that the commission has not yet released the timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 elections.
“To that extent, party primaries have not been held, and no political party has nominated candidates for the next general election,” Oyekanmi said.
He added that while citizens are free to engage in political discussions, formal campaigning or soliciting votes at this stage constitutes a violation of the Electoral Act.
“Any open campaign or canvassing for the 2027 General Election is not only inappropriate but also a violation of the Electoral Act,” he warned.
Citing Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Oyekanmi explained that public campaigning is only allowed 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours before election day.
“Section 95(1) of the Act also states clearly that a candidate and his or her party shall campaign for an election in accordance with such rules and regulations as may be determined by INEC,” he said.
He emphasized that all political parties had previously been notified at the commission’s last quarterly consultative meeting of the need to adhere strictly to these rules.
“The Commission expects full compliance with the law,” Oyekanmi stated.
