Infantino Suggests Red Cards for Players Who Cover Mouths.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has suggested that players who cover their mouths while
speaking on the pitch could be sent off if racist abuse is suspected.
The proposal follows allegations that Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius
Junior during a recent Champions League clash between Benfica and Real Madrid.
Prestianni denies the accusation.
Speaking after talks at the International Football Association Board, Infantino said:
“If a player covers his mouth and says something, and this has a racist
consequence, then he has to be sent off.
“There must be a presumption that he has said something he shouldn’t have said,
otherwise he wouldn’t have had to cover his mouth.”
He added that football must take firm action in the fight against racism and revealed
that the issue could be discussed further at the next FIFA Congress in Vancouver,
potentially ahead of this year’s World Cup.
Infantino also suggested sanctions for racist abuse might vary if a player apologises.
“You can do things in a moment of anger and apologise, and then the sanction has to
be different,” he said.
Prestianni was provisionally suspended for the second leg pending a UEFA
investigation and faces a possible 10-match ban if found guilty.
