Inter Milan claimed a 2-0 win over River Plate in Seattle to leapfrog into first place in Group E and seal a last-16 tie against Fluminense, sending the Argentine giants crashing out of the Club World Cup.
A tense first half offered little drama, though Lautaro Martínez and Francesco Pio Esposito both came close.
After the break, Inter turned up the pressure, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Martínez, and Federico Dimarco all spurning chances.
River’s hopes unraveled just after the hour when Lucas Martinez Quarta was sent off for a last-man foul on Mkhitaryan.
Inter eventually broke through as Mkhitaryan teed up Esposito to slot home his first goal for the club.
Alessandro Bastoni sealed the win in stoppage time with a brilliant solo effort, before Gonzalo Montiel received a second yellow to cap River’s miserable night.
Inter now face Fluminense, while River exit with regret and no goals against European opposition once again.
