Iran secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in Tehran, becoming the second Asian nation to qualify after Japan.
Mehdi Taremi was the hero for the hosts, scoring twice, including a crucial late equalizer in the 83rd minute to ensure Iran’s seventh World Cup appearance.
Uzbekistan, seeking a historic first qualification, led twice through Khojimat Erkinov and Abbosbek Fayzullaev, but Iran’s resilience proved decisive.
Captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh praised the home fans for their support, while Taremi admitted Iran “had tactical problems” after conceding twice.
With this result, Uzbekistan remain second in Group A and need one more win in June to confirm their maiden World Cup berth.
