Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United remains uncertain, with manager Eddie Howe expressing hope that the Swedish striker will stay, while acknowledging that key discussions are ongoing behind the scenes.

Isak, who has informed the club of his desire to explore other options this summer, was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Singapore.

The 24-year-old is currently in the North East managing a minor thigh injury, but speculation over his future continues to gather pace.

Despite talks over a new contract earlier in the year, no agreement has been reached. The forward, who has three years left on his current deal, has not submitted a formal transfer request, though interest from clubs including Liverpool remains.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s friendly against Arsenal, Howe described Isak as “very popular in the dressing room” and said he would “love him to continue his journey at Newcastle.”

However, the Newcastle boss made it clear that any outcome must be right for the club, adding that the Magpies are in a strong financial position and will not be rushed into a decision.

While the situation unfolds, Howe dismissed suggestions that it is disrupting pre-season preparations. “We are focused,” he said, pointing to his past experience in dealing with player exits.

“The club will make the right decision based on all the information available.”Meanwhile, Newcastle continue to work on strengthening their squad for the 2025/26 campaign.

The signing of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest has been completed for £55m, but efforts to land other key targets have proven difficult. Hugo Ekitike chose Liverpool, and goalkeeper James Trafford now looks set to join Manchester City. Howe admitted the market has been “challenging,” citing rising prices and a limited pool of quality players.

He stressed the need for depth ahead of a demanding season that includes Champions League football and insisted the club would remain active until the window closes.

Whether or not Isak remains part of that journey remains to be seen, but for now, Newcastle’s plans press ahead amid the uncertainty.
