Raul Jimenez’s crisp finish early in the second half secured Mexico a 1-0 win over Honduras in Santa Clara on Wednesday, sending the defending champions into a blockbuster CONCACAF Gold Cup final against the United States.
Mexico dominated possession but struggled to break down Honduras until 16-year-old Gilberto Mora threaded a perfect ball through for Jimenez, who rifled his shot past Edrick Menjivar in the 50th minute.
Edson Alvarez thought he had doubled Mexico’s lead soon after, only for his tap-in to be ruled offside following a lengthy VAR check.
Roberto Alvarado also missed a chance to extend the lead as Mexico controlled the game after the break.
Mexico, seeking a record-extending 10th Gold Cup title, will now face the US, who beat Guatemala 2-1 in Wednesday’s other semi-final, in Sunday’s final at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
“It’s a ‘Clasico’, we have to win. It will be a war,” said Mexico goalkeeper Luis Malagon, looking ahead to the fierce rivalry clash.
