Jimenez’s Late Heroics Secure Mexico’s Nations League Glory

March 24, 2025

Raul Jimenez struck twice, including a stoppage-time penalty, as Mexico edged Panama 2-1 to claim their first CONCACAF Nations League title at SoFi Stadium.

Jimenez opened the scoring in the 8th minute, heading in Roberto Alvarado’s pinpoint cross, but Adalberto Carrasquilla equalized from the penalty spot after Johan Vásquez fouled Cecilio Waterman following a VAR review.

A tense second half saw both sides struggle to create clear chances, with Mexico goalkeeper Luis Malagón making a crucial save to deny José Luis Rodríguez before the break.

The match was briefly halted in the 83rd minute due to homophobic chants from Mexican fans, marking the third consecutive Nations League final disrupted by such incidents.

With extra time looming, Panama’s Jose Cordoba handled the ball in the box, and Jimenez calmly converted the penalty in the 92nd minute to seal the win.

The victory marked a triumphant return for Mexico coach Javier Aguirre, who reclaimed the national team’s helm earlier this year.
