Nollywood actress Juliana Olayode has voiced concern over the way some social media users are interpreting the viral “Holy Spirit, carry me” trend.

In a post shared on Instagram, Olayode said that while asking the Holy Spirit for help is a powerful and meaningful prayer, some captions being used in the trend are inappropriate and disrespectful.

She particularly criticised captions that reference physical attributes, citing examples such as “Holy Spirit no carry me because of my big nyash,” which she said trivialises something sacred.

“It’s absolutely okay for us to ask the Holy Spirit to carry us; that’s a powerful prayer and a beautiful song,” she wrote. “What I don’t quite understand are some of the captions that are turning it into a cruise.”

The actress questioned whether those participating in the trend fully understand the spiritual significance of the Holy Spirit and urged Christians to treat the subject with reverence.

“Seeing captions like Holyspirit no carry me because of my big nyash, because I get weight, because he no like small things, makes me cringe. Do we know who we’re talking about here? The Holy Spirit?” she added.

Olayode also expressed concern that many Christians treat sacred matters too lightly on social media, comparing the situation with other religions where the names of spiritual figures are mentioned with greater reverence.

“I know we like to joke and catch cruise online, and sometimes it’s really just vibes, but I’ve been feeling a bit uncomfortable. We Christians take too many things with levity,” she said.

The actress emphasised that while humour and fun are part of online culture, they should not come at the expense of respect for spiritual beliefs.

The trend, which has gained popularity on TikTok, involves users calling on the Holy Spirit to “carry” them, often depicted symbolically as a bird in videos.

Several Nollywood stars, including Funke Akindele and Mercy Johnson, have also participated in the viral trend.
